Exclusive Interview: BONES executive producer Stephen Nathan on Season 7 and beyond

Fox has renewed BONES for an eighth season. The series, developed by Hart Hanson from the novels by Kathy Reichs, concerns the shared adventures of forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz), who last season finally got together romantically and this season have a baby daughter and a home together. Tonight, the Season Seven finale airs at 8 PM.

BONES executive producer Stephen Nathan, who shares show-running duties with Hanson, talks in this exclusive interview about where the show has been and where it’s going, including some hints about what we can expect from tonight’s episode.

ASSIGNMENT X: Were you pleased and/or surprised to have BONES run this long?
STEPHEN NATHAN: Oh, my God, it’s fantastic. I’ve never done a show for this long, and I always thought it would be a nightmare, and it’s exactly the opposite. It’s been fantastic. So you’re always surprised in this business to last more than one episode, but seven years has been a real blessing.

AX: Obviously, there’s now a big ongoing arc with Brennan and Booth and the baby.
NATHAN: B, B and B.

AX: The B, B and B arc. But are there going to be any more procedural arcs?
NATHAN: We do have a serial killer [who] [that changes] Booth and Brennan’s life in a pretty major way.

AX: Were there things that you wanted to do at the beginning that you wound up having enough time to do, or did the more you did it give you ideas like, “Oh, because TJ Thyne plays Hodgins this way, let’s have him do this particular thing”?
NATHAN: I think that [the latter] is the more common experience with a show. The show has a natural life of its own and it evolves on its own, so that you find out where the characters are going and what the strengths and weaknesses of the show are, so you kind of recalibrate things as you go along, and that changes all the time. And I think if you don’t, the show becomes dead.

AX: What is the division of responsibility between you and Hart Hanson?
NATHAN: Well, Hart and I have been doing BONES together for years, and this [past season], Hart was doing THE FINDER, so we kind of split duties, where I [was] doing BONES and he was doing THE FINDER and of course we talked all the time and share ideas, but launching a new show is a huge ordeal and what he was doing was superhuman. So he was off doing that and I [was] making sure BONES stays afloat. [On BONES when Hanson is there], we oft-times split episodes. I take three acts, he takes three acts, and then we swap them. We have a pretty good way of working.

AX: So it’s not like one of you specializes more in the procedural and one of you specializes more in the emotional scenes?
NATHAN: I think we both kind of do both things and then we also have just a wonderful, wonderful staff of writers who are terrific, who will just give us wonderful stories and great murders. They’re all terrific writers, so we’re blessed.

AX: When Emily Deschanel became pregnant in real life, was that a dilemma in terms of the story arc as to whether Brennan the character should be pregnant on the show or whether you would try to hide the pregnancy from the camera?
NATHAN: Well, actually, Hart and I had been talking about that scenario on our own, even before Emily was pregnant, because we wanted to advance that relationship [between Brennan and Booth] without doing the, “They fall in love and then they’re all goo-goo with each other.” And this was just a perfect storm in a good way. And so when she announced that she was pregnant, it was just a natural thing for the show to incorporate that into the show.

AX: Was the reveal of the fact Brennan and Booth slept together when Brennan talked to Michael Conlin’s character Angela – forgive me for putting words into your mouth if this isn’t it – the show’s way of going, “It’s really not a big deal in terms of their characters, they aren’t changing, the relationship really isn’t changing …”
NATHAN: Well, obviously, they’re changing because they’re a couple and now they’re going to have a baby, but they’re the same people, and that’s what we wanted, more than anything. We wanted to keep the dynamics of the show the same. So now they just have a more intense situation to disagree about. Rather than the audience seeing the same situations played out over and over again, this is all new ground. And it takes us into a whole new area. Not only with Booth and Brennan, but with Angela and Hodgins, with Booth’s family, with her family. It’s a big change.

AX: Last season, Ryan Cartwright’s character Vincent Nigel-Murray was killed off and his death resonated through the other characters. Was he written off the show because you needed an emotional death, or was that because Cartwright was cast as a series regular on ALPHAS?
NATHAN: He went and got another job. We love Ryan and it was as sad and as painful for us to see him go as it was for the audience. We didn’t want to see him leave, [but] “Ryan’s not going to be here.” And also, there was something so sweet and emotional about him as a character, and his death seemed like it would be the most painful at the time, so it worked out well for us, although we were very, very sorry to see him go. He’s brilliant always.

AX: Has there ever been anything on BONES that’s grossed you out?
NATHAN: Yes, there was one thing that I actually said, “We can’t put it on TV. It’s just too revolting.”

AX: Did you put it on anyway?
NATHAN: No, I actually didn’t. And I’m the guy who does all the disgusting stuff. I love the revolting stuff, and it’s fun for me, and I find it amusing, but there was one thing actually in the episode [“The Crack in the Code”] – there was a shot that I said, “We’ve got to cut it out of the show, it’s just too horrible” [laughs]. It was too horrible, it just took me out of the show. Usually, we have more decomposed bodies, so we can have more fun with them, if that’s valid to say without sounding like a completely sick human being. But this was a freshly dead person – a dead body that [the production team had constructed] and the way he looked in a couple of shots was just too awful.

AX: Between Brennan and Booth’s daughter and Angela and Hodgins’ son, are you worried about all the toddler wrangling that will be going on of necessity next season?
NATHAN: No. Because I don’t have to do the wrangling! [laughs]

AX: Is that going to wreak havoc with the shooting schedule?
NATHAN: Not really. BONES is always going to be a procedural. It’s always going to be a lot of murders, it’s always going to be a lot of investigations and the relationship between Booth and Brennan. So the fact that they have families now, Booth and Brennan as well as Angela and Hodgins, is just kind of icing on the cake. It’s never going to be the cake itself.

AX: Are you looking forward to making an eighth season?
NATHAN: Absolutely, no question about it. I’m chomping at the bit.

Per noi ha sempre funzionato avere lo stesso tempo che trascorre per i nostri personaggi ed Ii nostri spettatori, e credo che sarà molto simile anche questa volta. Passeranno un paio di mesi.

TVLINE | per quanto tempo Brennan sarà una fuggitiva?
Ecco cosa dirò: c’è un mandato d’arresto contro di lei e lei sta evitando questo mandato. Se viene arrestata ed entra nel sistema, allora Pelant può farle ciò che vuole, il che sarebbe abbastanza terribile. Quindi lei resta fuori dal sistema in questo periodo di tempo con l’aiuto di suo padre.

TVLINE | per quanti episodi verrà giocata questa carta il prossimo autunno?
Occorreranno un po’ di episodi prima che la storia di Pelant sia risolta. Penso che avremo Brennan e Booth di nuovo insieme – e lei di nuovo al lavoro al Jeffersonian – per la fine del primo episodio. Non so se voglio dirlo o no, ma l’ho appena fatto. [Ride]

La domanda è chi è con lei e chi no. Come abbiamo mostrato nel finale, tutti quelli che lavorano con lei prendono una posizione. Questa cosa continua? Chi, di fatto, è suo complice. E chi, di fatto, resta professionale e mantiene un atteggiamento oggettivo. Hai bisogno di entrambe queste cose per sopravvivere e forse fermare Pelant.

TVLINE | Ha messo una bomba nell’orologio?
[Ride] non te lo dirò mai. Che cosa diavolo faceva in casa?! Devi sintonizzarti e scoprirlo.

TVLINE | riguardo i quattro episodi extra, immagino che non possano essere mandati in onda all’inizio della stagione, dato che avete un grosso problema di continuità con la sparizione di Brennan.
Contiamo di mandarne in onda uno o due all’inizio della stagione, ma non saranno la premiere. E dubito saranno mandati come secondo episodio. Dovremmo riuscire a trasmetterne uno al terzo o quarto posto. Ma non so più di questo.

'Bones' Season 7 Finale: 7 Burning Questions from 'The Past in the Present'


Season finales are all about surprises, and Bones season 7 gave us a big one. As is always the case with great finales, Bones also gave us a number of questions demanding answers. Here are 7 of the biggest.

WARNING: This article assumes you have seen the Bones season 7 finale. If you have not, read on only if you want Bones spoilers.

Brennan has disappeared. Pelant remains free and dedicated to framing Brennan for murder. All of the biggest Bones questions stem from these facts.

1. How long until Booth and Brennan reunite?

Possibly the biggest question raised by Brennan's abrupt departure at the end of "The Past in the Present" is about timing. When, in terms of Bones season 8, will Booth and Brennan get back together?

The way I see it, Bones could answer this in one of three ways:

1. Brennan is not exonerated quickly, and we spend a few episodes with Brennan on the run.
2. Brennan is exonerated during the time covered by the summer hiatus, and we see her back at home when season 8 begins.
3. Brennan is exonerated quickly at the beginning of Bones season 8 and returns home by the end of the first episode.

In terms of Bones plotting, this last option seems the best for the show. But who knows what will happen after a twist like that?


2. Will we see Brennan and Christine on the road?

Unless Brennan comes home before the Bones season 8 premiere, we will hopefully get a look at Brennan and Christine's life on the run. Brennan tends to be a memorable person. And she'll be with a baby. Max might try to teach Brennan about staying hidden, but this could still be a very amusing storyline.


3. Will the FBI arrest Brennan when she returns?

Will Brennan still be in trouble in season 8? Even if the FBI clears Brennan for the Pelant murders, fleeing during an investigation seems like a big no-no. Obviously Booth wouldn't do anything like report Brennan for kidnapping, but the FBI might still be angry.


4. Will Brennan be able to return to her job?

Whether laws were broken or not, Brennan's abrupt flight may put her job at the Jeffersonian in danger. That job may have already been in some jeopardy, thanks to the Pelant case. Cam would certainly take her back, but other people might have a say in Jeffersonian employment.

Of course, Brennan would not remain fired forever. Bones would never take our icky remains away from us like that!


5. What does this mean for Booth and Brennan?

Brennan might avoid legal problems resulting from her escape. She could get her job back. But what about Booth? How will he feel about the whole thing?

Obviously, he won't be happy. That's a given. But how unhappy are we talking here?

It's possible that Booth will just be happy to have his girls back. Maybe he will have some brief anger that he will overcome with relief. There could be a period of coolness and strain in the Booth-Brennan relationship -- a period that ends with the realization that it's no fun to be angry.

Or Booth could be mad enough to end it all -- temporarily or permanently -- with Brennan. That seems unlikely, considering the plot of Bones, but it's possible.


6. What was Pelant doing in Booth and Brennan's house?

Seeing as his actions did not appear to relate to anything else that happened in "The Past in the Present," what the heck was Pelant doing?

The serial killer seemed to be planting evidence of some sort -- that would explain switching out the clock radio. And he took a Polaroid. And grinned at the security camera in an evil way.

What could that all mean? Honestly, I have no idea. Sorry.


7. What about those extra Bones episodes?

FOX ordered four extra Bones episodes this spring. The episodes are meant to be generic Bones stories, not tied into the overarching themes of the entire season.

But now, with the abrupt departure of Brennan, how will these stories fit into Bones?

Airing the episodes during the summer would be weird, plot-wise -- how would they explain Brennan's magical reappearance? Alternatively, the episodes could fit into Bones season 8. That might work, although it will depend on what else Bones has planned.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see!

E' vero che la fuga non potevano portarla avanti per tanti episodi altrimenti dovevano chiamarlo "Bones Break" però mi aspettavo uscissero un po' dagli schemi, il ritorno a fine 8x01 è proprio scontato...
Menomale che almeno la storyline di Pelant non si conclude subito

beh, ma se non è il primo episodio torna nel secondo ... lo show non funziona se loro due non sono insieme quindi per me non è poi tanto spoiler.
Piuttosto sono curiosa di sapere come gestiranno la questione fuga di Bren, quali conseguenze avrà. Torna perchè viene scagionata? Pelant sarà ancora libero?

È talmente bravo a manipolare le persone, forse li sta solo manipolando. O ha qualcuno che lo aiuta coscientemente? Queste sono domande che vorrei rimanessero in sospeso per un po’.
So che avete dibattuto su quale avrebbe dovuta essere l’ultima ripresa del finale, che è finita con Brennan e Christine che vanno via in macchina nella notte. Che altro avevate preso in considerazione?
Ci siamo battuti per questa cosa. C’erano diverse riprese con cui avremmo potuto finire. Una era Booth che veniva lasciato solo. Una era Pelant che faceva qualcosa, mentre aveva il controllo, e poi che andava via libero nel mondo con il permesso di usare di nuovo i computer, lasciando questo tipo di spavento. Questa era la nostra terza scelta. Un'altra era di trovare possibilmente un altro corpo. Ma eravamo molto interessati all’idea di finire con Booth e Brennan alla fine. Questo è stato il grosso dibattito.

Quindi adesso Pelant è libero di usare i computer.
E’ ancora in libertà condizionata, ma non è più agli arresti domiciliari e in effetti comincerà ad insegnare scienze informatiche in una scuola privata. Questo è il lavoro che gli viene offerto proprio all’inizio del finale di stagione. Quindi è di nuovo nel mondo. Se quest’uomo ha fatto ciò che ha fatto solo usando dei libri di una biblioteca, immagina cosa potrebbe fare se potesse davvero avere accesso ad un computer.
Un’altra domanda che abbiamo ricevuto è se Booth avrà problemi di fiducia nei confronti di Brennan nell’8^ stagione a causa della sua decisione di andarsene. Come influenzerà la loro relazione?
Ci sono due risposte a questa cosa. La prima è no. Come Max gli ha spiegato, sai che questa è la soluzione che ha più senso. Il problema sempre presente tra Booth e Brennan avrà sempre le sue radici nel fatto che lei è molto, molto razionale e che questa cosa non convive sempre bene con Booth, che tende ad essere più impulsivo ed emotivo nel suo processo decisionale. E viceversa. Vengono da due culture talmente diverse che ci sarà sempre questa area grigia tra loro in cui si chiederanno cosa farà l’altro. Quindi se assoluta fiducia significa che tu sai cosa l’altra persona farà e lo approverai, è ancora un problema irrisolto tra loro. Non è come lui l’avrebbe gestita, ma penso che capisca completamente perché lei abbia fatto ciò che ha fatto.
Non vede alternative, ma per lui è un po’ spaventoso che lei abbia agito così. Eppure lui, penso, la ammira. È il perché la ama – non è una donna in alcun modo prevedibile. A lui piace la sua integrità e viceversa. C’è un piccolo momento che si vede e non so se i fan lo hanno notato, ma alla fine del battesimo Booth dice “Amen”. Brennan non dice “Amen”, lei li guarda solo con interesse. Per lei ciò che sta accadendo è senza senso, ma comprende che conta tantissimo per Booth, e questo per lei è abbastanza.
